Yahoo! announced on Tuesday it is buying Associated Content, a website with a vast stable of freelance writers, in a major push by the Internet portal to offer more original content.

Yahoo!, which has engaged a number of writers and editors in recent months, did not disclose the financial terms of the acquisition but several technology blogs put the purchase price at around $US100 million ($A115.9 million).

Denver, Colorado-based Associated Content hosts some 380,000 freelance contributors from around the United States writing on a variety of subjects.

Yahoo! said after the bell Tuesday that it has agreed to acquire user-generated content website Associated Content. It did not disclose terms of the deal. Various media reports put the total value around $90 to $100 million.

Yahoo ( YHOO - news - people ) said the deal will allow it to continue its promise to offer the best of the Web by combining Associated Content's 380,000 contributors with its own leadership in partnering with content brands and editors. The acquisition will expand Yahoo's reach into more topic areas and real-time content generation, a plus for advertisers, Yahoo said. Associated Content has more than 16 million unique users per month. The transaction is expected to close in the third quarter.
