AdAge: Demand Media to supply original content to USA Today - Journalism.co.uk (blog)
Demand Media . The section already has around 4,000 travel articles provided by Demand Media’s freelancers.

Demand Media (…) is paying to generate the content and is selling keyword advertising in the section. USA Today is selling its new display ad inventory. The two are splitting the revenue.

Demand Media’s CMO Dave Panos defends the editorial standards in place at the company and claims it does not deserve to be thought of as a ‘content farm’.

Demand Media’s CMO Dave Panos defends the editorial standards in place at the company and claims it does not deserve to be thought of as a ‘content farm’. ‘Content farm’ is not a term we prefer, because it we think it has a negative connotation and that it paints a picture of a nameless, faceless organization that churns out low-quality, thoughtless content. This is not at all what we do. We think our studio bears a greater resemblance to larger, distinctive content-creation companies like Reuters. Our studio is made up of thousands of creative professionals, and each piece of content is touched by 11 qualified individuals with a high degree of editorial oversight.

Bebo to shut or be sold - Vertical Leap News (press release)
Bebo, one of the most popular social networking sites is to close or be sold by AOL, two years after it was bought for a reported £557 million.

In news that is likely to upset thousands of British teens who frequent the social networking site, owner AOL has announced that heavy competition from rivals has forced the decision.

Bebo reached giddy heights in 2008, but 2009 saw the decline of the British born company, as users fell by 60 per cent in the period from February 2009 to February 2010, leaving the site with just 4 million users. Thus if the content generation site were to be sold, it could be worth a small proportion of what AOL initially paid.

It is expected that AOL will complete its evaluation of Bebo by next month and its future or lack of, will be sealed. It remains to be seen whether its fall will further bolster the success of the growing entity that is Facebook.

Day One with the Smudgetastic Magic Slate - Minneapolis Star Tribune (blog)
This blog covers everything except sports and gardening, unless we find a really good link about using dead professional bowlers for mulch. The author is a StarTribune columnist, has been passing off fiction and hyperbole as insight since 1997, has run his own website since the Jurassic era of AOL, and was online when today’s college sophomores were a year away from being born. So get off his lawn.

It will take a while to get used to typing on this screen. I don’t have l;rage hands but it sdyill feelsa bit like typing wiht oven mitts. But I thought typing on the iphone would be peculiar, and somehow managed to adjust.

The screen is great, but it smudges easily. This is easily remedied by not touching the screen. Granted, you can’t use the machine, but just knowing you possess one is enough.

So then: is it a replacement for an actual computer one might carry around? Yes and no.  Depends on what you do, of course; if you edit video or pictures or any other sort of content-generation job, you will not be happy with an iPad. But that’s like being angry at a cookbook because it doesn’t come with ginzu knives and a pound of raw tuna. The point of the iPad is consumption, not creation. You can write, of course, and the Numbers and Keynote apps allow some business-type work, but no one’s going to buy the iPad right now to make spreadsheets.
