The Guardian’s Organ Grinder blog has taken the view that the service has been hurriedly launched so as to take full advantage of growing interest in on demand broadcasting – a service first penned by one of the most popular online news providers - the BBC.

It is reported that SeeSaw’s rapid launch was to quickly create a stronghold in the UK video on demand market which is expected to soon become rather crowded with other companies such as BSkyB getting on the bandwagon.

At the moment, SeeSaw is offering free UK programmes to users but it plans to add a pay per programme feature in the Summer which will prove a test of the company’s success.

The Arquiva owned, free to use service will offer the most encompassing selection of television content on one site – having content agreements with the BBC, Channel 4, Channel 5 and other production companies. Last month in its beta format, SeeSaw was trialled amongst 20,000 people who offered feedback on the service before its release.

The Telegraph reports that SeeSaw will go live with over 3,000 hours of content, however, such content will not include ITV who as yet have not signed a deal. This is rumoured to be due to an ITV 10 week shake-up review by new chairman Archie Norman.

SeeSaw hopes to become a ”one stop shop” for broadcast content online, hoping to generate revenue from the growing numbers of viewers who need to catch up on their favourite TV show or wish to watch it at a different time to its normal schedule.
