ONA Conference 2010: What's next in online journalism - Journalism.co.uk (blog) 2010 conference of the Online News Association (ONA) pushed further the debate on how technology is shaping the future of journalism in the evolving web media landscape. The event was held in Washington DC, the US capital, between the 28-30 October, 2010. Founded in 1999, ONA now has more than 1,600 professional members, both American and international, who are active in the business of gathering, producing and disseminating news through the Internet. Since its first edition in 2004, the association’s annual conference has been the premier global arena bringing together highly engaged digital journalists, multimedia producers, content editors, technologists, programmers, designers and newsroom decision-makers from major media markets, independent websites and leading academic institutions. Also this year hundreds of participants converged from all around the world to meet and learn about the latest software and hardware tools for content management, search and distribution platforms, to discuss advancements and challenges in the industry and to network face-to-face in order to share best practices. ONA Conference 2010: What's next in online journalism - Journalism.co.uk (blog) How Much Segmenting Is too Much? - ClickZ News In a perfect world, every e-mail you get would be driven off of your actual interactions with the brand sending it. Maybe you haven't been in the store for awhile. Maybe you recently bought online from the site, or maybe you are new to subscribe to the list and most recently searched for "kids' socks" on the site. In the real world, creating templates that support dynamic datafeeds is difficult enough. Creating database integration points that feed all of the personal and behavioral data you need to speak personally to your consumer is close to impossible. Over 65 percent of companies eliminate all personalization except first name from their programs due to issues with datafeeds and dynamic content generation. But how much segmentation do you need? And, in reality, how much is too much? I posed this question to 25 people I know in the e-mail industry who I consider "experts" and got this set of responses and recommendations. Segmentation should never be built after the fact, it should always and only be part of the registration process to ensure 100 percent accuracy. If the subscriber doesn't tell you, you shouldn't guess. ECM as a Framework for IT Governance - IDM.net.au Andy Wang, Director of ECM Strategy for Laserfiche, considers SharePoint’s impact on enterprise content management. SharePoint plays a very unique role in Enterprise Content Management. It is neither your traditional definition of ECM nor is it not. At a recent Laserfiche Analysts, Consultants, & Experts (ACE) Q&A Panel at Empower 2010, a Gartner and an IDC analyst both described SharePoint as an interesting platform that indeed has value proposition; but not necessarily all the same as when people think about ECM today. If anything, I believe SharePoint brings another dimension of value proposition to ECM. Rather than looking at how SharePoint fits in the traditional definition of ECM, it is more likely that ECM will be redefined. So before considering whether that helps or hinders the ECM landscape; first understand that SharePoint significantly changed the landscape. Good changes, too, I might add. Records Management propels into the limelight, image and capture tools become more important than ever, and ECM becomes an infrastructure play. Not a question I like, because if you accept the notion that SharePoint really isn’t traditional ECM then I believe the focus should be on what value does a solution that encompasses SharePoint and content management technology provides. Nonetheless, a good description of SharePoint I hear often is that it is a very thin and long horizontal piece that leaves a lot of white space for depth. SharePoint 2007 provides a very good set of rudimentary ECM capabilities such as document collaboration and basic web content management. It is easy for user to adopt, and does a chunk of document management. Google’s “Living Stories” was revealed last year in October by a post on the Official Google Blog. The google lab experiment aims to create a single page where readers can follow one story in the news, tracking new developments as they occur and are reported. At the time, Google announced that it hoped to make the tool available to publishers outside of their initial test in Google Labs. Last week, this aim was realised, with the company announcing that the Living Stories tool is now open source – inviting all web developers to use their code to build their own pages with the new feature. A ‘living story’ will feature a single web page with several standard features, continuously updated as more information comes in. Each page will begin with a summary at the top of the page, rewritten to reflect updates and to highlight the most important information. There will also be a running catalogue of information related to the story, ordered chronologically with precedence given to the latest information. A time line displayed on each page will provide an instant snapshot of the story’s most important developments. 1 | 2 |
